CHAPTER 65

From the foyer he could see that lights were out in most of the house. The smell of wood burning in the fireplace and scented candles greeted him. He waited to hear familiar sounds as he hung up his coat but there were none. He felt a little alarmed.

“Geneva!”

He didn’t want to yell too loud in case the baby was sleeping. No one was in the sitting room and he looked in his office. All the lights were out in there. He called to her again. Entering the hall he saw a shadow outside her bedroom. He stood fixed in the hall waiting to see the owner of the shadow. His sixth sense didn’t kick in so there was no feeling of danger.

Hesitantly she came out of her bedroom wearing a white fitted sheath down to her ankles with a slit up to mid thigh. It had only one sleeve and was cut drastically across her breasts and the edges were trimmed in rhinestones. She wore rhinestones in her hair and silver shoes completed the picture. Since she could not attend the party, she had decided to play dress-up in the beautiful dress that had been made for her and the jewels Miss Kathleen had allowed her to wear. She was admiring herself in the full length mirror when she heard him call to her.

Slowly, she walked toward Dalton. He could see her long leg kick out through the slit. He could only stare at the lovely vision coming toward him. He loved the way the bright white dress played on her brown skin. When she got closer, he stretched his hands out to her. He could barely speak.

“You, you look amazing.” He took off his tuxedo jacket and dropped it on the floor and undid his bowtie.

“Thank you.” Geneva bowed her head. He took his hand and lifted her chin until their eyes met.

“Come and have a drink with me.”

He led her by the hand into the warm sitting room with the glowing candles lighting their way. From a bottle of champagne that had been chilling in a silver ice bucket, he poured two glasses.

“Why did you come back so early?” She spoke in a soft husky voice. He handed her a glass a glass of champagne and sat her down on the small sofa so they could be close.

“You’re all dressed up. Were you expecting someone?” He embarrassed her.

“Of course not. I wanted. I mean. I just thought that, well, I’ve never had anything so lovely in my life as this dress and I wanted to put it on and dream about what it would be like to be at a fancy place and all.”

“You won’t have to dream Geneva, I will take you to fancy places in this dress and in as many other fancy dresses you want.”

“There are places where you can take a colored woman?”

“Oh yeah, I think you’d be surprised. But other than my aunt, you won’t see many other white women with a well dressed colored man out at any place.
